1. pose a threat to sth. 對~造成威脅

    Deforestation poses a threat to the ecosystem.

    過度伐木對生態系統造成威脅。

    pose/ raise a question 提出問題

 

2. strike a balance between A and B 取得平衡

    Students should learn to strike a balance between study and play.

    學生應該學會在課業和玩樂之間取得平衡。

    strike a deal 達成協議

 

3. hatch a plot against sb. 策劃陰謀

    The rebels hatched a plot against the king. They schemed to assassinate him.

    反叛份子策劃反國王的陰謀。他們計畫要暗殺他。

 

4. file a lawsuit against sb. 控告

    The legislator announced that he would file a lawsuit against the journalist.

    這位立法委員宣布他將對記者提告。

    file a tax return 報稅

    file for divorce 訴請離婚

 

5. curry favor with sb. 阿諛奉承

    Those who tend to curry favor with superiors don't necessarily gain benefits from them. 

    愛拍馬屁的人未必能從上位者那得到好處。

 

6. lay claim to sth. 堅稱為個人所有

    The Japanese government laid claim to the Diaoyutai Islands.

    日本政府認為釣魚台列嶼為日本領土。

7. dance attendance on sb. 討人歡心

    The men danced attendance on the rich woman to sponge off her.

    為了揩油,這些男子向富婆獻殷勤。

 

8. catch a glimpse of sb. 一瞥

    Howard elbowed his way through the crowd to catch a fleeting glimpse of the movie star.

    霍華德用手肘在人群中開路以一瞥電影明星的風采。

 

9. cast aspersions on sb. 毀謗

    The TV host cast aspersions on the guest by saying he was a homosexual.

    電視主持人中傷這位來賓,說他是同性戀。

      Some Taiwanese women are good at driving a hard bargain.

      有些台灣女性很會殺價。

      超人給予壞蛋致命一擊,救出女主角。

 

12. swear sb. to secrecy 使人發誓要保密

      The girl broke the window and then swore her brother to secrecy.

      女孩打破了窗戶,然後逼弟弟要保密。

      swear allegiance to sb. 發誓對某人效忠

 

13. plead guilty 認罪

      The suspect pleaded guilty after concrete evidence was presented.

      嫌疑犯在具體證據顯示後認罪。

 

14. perform surgery 動手術

      The veterinarian carefully performed surgery on the wounded dog.

      獸醫仔細為受傷的狗動手術。

      The U.S. waged war on Afghanistan after the 911 terrorist attack.

      It is reported that the newly-implemented policy doesn't meet the public's needs.

      據報導,新實施的政策沒有符合大眾需求。

 

36. weather the crisis 度過危機

      To weather the financial crisis, the government decided to take austerity measures.

      為了度過財政危機,政府決定要採取經濟緊縮的措施。

 

37. harbor/ nurse a suspicion 抱持懷疑

      The prosecutor nursed a suspicion that the suspect told the truth.

      檢察官懷疑嫌疑犯是否真的說實話。

      The man heaved a sigh after knowing he didn't win the lottery.

      這名男子得知自己沒有中樂透後長嘆了一口氣。
