說到害怕，不難想到英文是be afraid of sth.

其他代換如下：

be afraid of sth.

= be scared of sth.

= be frightened of sth.

= be terrified of sth.

= fear sth.

be scared to death為嚇個半死

此片語也可以改成be scared out of one's wits

例如：

Sara was scared out of her wits when a cockroach flew towards her.

當一隻蟑螂向莎拉飛來的時候，她嚇得驚慌失措。

be afraid of one's own shadow意指一個人極為膽小，整天提心吊膽

He is the very kind of person who is afraid of his own shadow, so don't tell him any ghost stories.

他膽小如鼠，所以不要跟他說任何鬼故事。

除了上述這些用法

我提供幾個有用的害怕寫法

1. dread the thought of sth. 「想到~就害怕」

    The child dreaded the thought of eating green peppers.

    這孩子想到吃青椒就害怕起來。

2. give sb. the creeps/ shudders 「讓人毛骨悚然」

    The crawling caterpillers on the branch really give people the creeps.

    樹枝上蠕動的毛毛蟲讓人感到不寒而慄。

3. send a chill down one's spine 「讓人背脊發涼」

    The serial killer's candid display of inhumanity sent a chill down my spine.

    這名連續殺人犯顯露出的冷血殘酷讓我背脊發涼。

再來是「惶恐」的相關單字

consternation un. 驚慌失措

The idea of living without her parents filled the girl with consternation.

無法和父母住在一起的想法讓女孩感到惶恐。

To our consternation, a bear was prowling around our tent.

令我們驚恐的是，一隻熊當時正在我們的帳篷四周尋尋覓覓。

trepidation un. 惴惴不安；恐懼不安

As the anniversary of the A-bomb explosion over Hiroshima approaches, the world has reason to view the nuclear proliferation with trepidation.

隨著廣島原子彈周年紀念日將近，世人大有理由認為擴散核武是讓人恐懼不安的。

接著來介紹幾個形容詞

1. hair-raising adj. 令人恐懼的

    a hair-raising story 恐怖的故事

2. spooky adj. 陰森的

    a spooky attic with creaking stairs 樓梯嘎吱作響的恐怖閣樓

3. eerie adj. 怪異而令人恐懼的

    an eerie sound from behind the wall 牆後傳來的詭異聲音

4. ghastly adj. 聳動的

    a ghastly murder 駭人聽聞的殺人案

最後順道一提

怯場的英文是stage fright

To have a tremendous performance, you have to overcome your stage fright.
